Stanford Middle School Scholars Program

Summer

July 8 - 26, 2024
9am - 12pm Pacific Time, Monday - Friday

During the summer, scholars meet Monday - Friday from 9:00am - 12:00pm Pacific Time for live programming. Scholars are required to attend all scheduled sessions. All sessions are open to participants only, unless otherwise noted.

Week One: Welcome Week

During welcome week, scholars will attend program orientation, tech orientation, and workshops on time management, academic exploration, and writing to help them prepare for their summer courses. Scholars also attend three student life activities with our Student Life team and SMSSP instructors to get to know their peers and build community.

Program Orientation, Technology Orientation, and an Introduction to Stanford Online High School (OHS) session will be held on the first day of the program.

Parents and legal guardians are strongly encouraged to attend the three orientation sessions listed below with their scholars.

Technology Orientation
During Tech Orientation, scholars will be introduced to the technology used in the program as well as have an opportunity to test their own devices to ensure compatibility with our systems. Following day one of programming from 12:00-12:30pm PST,our Technology Team will hold a drop-in session for students who need additional support or troubleshooting.

Program Orientation
During program orientation, scholars will meet our program staff and instructors and review the program schedule and rules and expectations.On day two of the program, scholars will join breakout rooms with their assigned summer course instructor where they will be introduced to their cohort group.

Introduction to Stanford Online High School (OHS)
During this session, scholars, parents, and legal guardians will learn about Stanford OHS. Members of the Stanford OHS Office of Admissions will provide an overview of our school and help scholars and their families explore how Stanford OHS may fit into their future academic plans.

 

Week One

Week Two and Three

During the second and third weeks of the program, scholars meet daily for a 2 hour, live, virtual classroom discussion led by a Stanford OHS instructor. Scholars experience enriching academics as well as social activities that build community and inspire lifelong learning. Following daily class instruction, scholars will participate in instructor-led study hall or a student life activity. Scholars should expect up to 4 hours of outside-of-class assignments to be completed during instructor-led study hall each week.

End of Summer Celebration
Parents & legal guardians welcome

Parents and legal guardians are invited to join their scholars to celebrate the end of the summer session. SMSSP instructors and Stanford OHS staff will join scholars and their families as we highlight the summer and applaud scholar achievements. Important information about preparing for the fall semester will be shared with scholars at the celebration.

Summer Attendance Policy

Scholars must attend all live course meetings with their webcam on to successfully complete the summer session. Scholars are expected to participate in class and activities by using their microphone and the chat feature to contribute to discussions. All activities are designed to provide participants with a well-rounded experience. Only enrolled students are permitted to attend class meetings.

Scholars should only miss class for health or religious reasons. Parents/legal guardians should email spcs-studentlife@stanford.edu to report an absence or tardiness. Scholars should communicate the absence in advance to their instructor, whenever possible.

A student is considered absent from a class if:

  • The student does not attend the discussion section;
  • The student misses 15 minutes or more of the discussion section due to being late, leaving early, or stepping out in the middle.
